Cures and Remedies For Morning Sickness
Without a doubt suffering with pregnancy morning sickness is pure misery and it's important for you to get support from your friends and family. Sadly there is no cure for morning sickness, but there are a number of things you can try to help minimize the symptoms of morning sickness
- Try to drink plenty of fluids especially if you are losing a lot of liquid through vomiting. Fluids high in nutrients are ideal such as: milk shakes, fruit and vegetable juices and soups.
- Eat a diet high in protein and complex carbohydrates - both help fight nausea.
- Avoid the sight, smell and taste of any foods that make you feel queasy. Let your body guide you in picking your food choices at this time.
- Avoid cigarette smoke and alcohol, which increases symptoms of morning sickness.
- Eat small meals and often - do not wait until you are hungry because when your stomach is empty its acids have nothing to digest apart from its own lining which can trigger morning sickness symptoms. Long periods between meals can lead to a drop in blood sugar level which can also trigger the symptoms of morning sickness. Eating 6 small meals a day is better than eating 3 large meals.
- Before you get up in the morning have a ginger biscuit or piece of dry toast and start your day off slowly, try to avoid rushing around.
- Make sure you get enough rest and sleep whenever possible.
- Choose a mild toothpaste to brush your teeth with as strong toothpastes can really set off a bout of nausea and/or vomiting.
- Try to minimize stress as much as possible.
- Give sea-bands / Travel Bands a try, they are worn on both wrists and work by putting pressure on the acupressure points on the inner wrists, this can often relieve nausea. Sea-bands are readily available from chemist's and supermarkets.
You can also try:
- Ginger capsules, biscuits and ginger beer
- Smelling a lemon
- Sucking peppermints
- Small amounts of fizzy drinks
Please remember that if you begin to find it impossible to keep any food or drink down you must seek medical advice and consult your GP.
